1. YLAI Fellows Begin Fellowships in the United States

   Civil society leaders and entrepreneurs of the Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) program from Latin America and the Caribbean convene in the United States to begin their individual fellowships in cities across the country.

2. World Learning: A World Fit for Kids! – Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia

   

   World Learning, through a subaward partnership with A World Fit For Kids! brought coaches and administrators from Bahrain, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia to Los Angeles to learn how to better serve youth and to address health issues, such as obesity.

   Before her IVLP, Yamilett Martinez Briseño was the Director General of the Office on International Affairs and Exchanges program at the Sonora Ministry of Education when in 2004, Briseño participated in the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) project, "Leadership Development for Women." During her project, she was exposed to new critical thinking methodologies and met women working in different professional sectors in the federal government and at a number of nonprofit and private sector organizations.

   Briseño currently serves as the General Director of Sonora's Office of International Cooperation (OFECI) and credits her participation in the IVLP for enhancing her leadership skills and showing her new approaches she could use to strengthen economic development, border community initiatives, and cross-border relationships.

   Briseño has been the catalyst for growth of many Sonoran programs and she credits the IVLP as the foundation for many of these bilateral initiatives between Arizona and Sonora. She created opportunities to combat crime through binational training and information exchanges, expanded the Chief Science Officers (CSO) Program, and increased gastronomic tourism visits to the area.

   Yamilett Martinez Briseño is a leader who has successfully used her networks to build opportunities and works tirelessly to improve the lives of citizens in Sonora.

This interactive virtual session will provide international relations students, interns, and foreign affairs professionals an in-depth understanding of the role of exchange programs in global power dynamics and strategic power and offer networking opportunities with foreign affairs related organizations.

   The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) recognizes that achieving progress when it comes to advancing women’s economic empowerment requires us to work in collaboration with partners. ECA partners with the private sector, academia, and other public entities where there is strong alignment to meet program objectives.

7. Empowering Women and Girls: WNBA Basketball Envoys in Ukraine

   

   The State Department and NBA worked together to send former WNBA players Tamika Raymond and Nykesha Sales to Ukraine as Sports Envoys from January 28 to February 2, 2013.

8. WEAmericas Initiative

   The Women’s Entrepreneurship in the Americas (WEAmericas) initiative and exchange elevates the economic status of women throughout the Western Hemisphere. WEAmericas was founded in the 2012 Summit of the Americas and brings women entrepreneurs from Latin America and the Caribbean to the United States on an International Visitor Leadership Program.

9. A Global Match: American Mentors Empower Women Leaders in Sports

   The Global Sports Mentoring Program (GSMP) continues to pair emerging women leaders from around the world with women sports executives as the flagship component of State Department’s Empowering Women and Girls through Sports initiative.

    During their Youth Exchange and Study (YES) exchange program orientation, these students participated in a dog meet-and-greet.
