GET GLOBAL: HOST AN EXCHANGE STUDENT IN YOUR HOME
Host an international high school student for a few weeks or an academic year. Share cultures, develop future leaders, and form bonds that last a lifetime.
EXTRAORDINARY STUDENTS FROM AROUND THE WORLD
High school students from countries around the world are selected though a highly competitive process to come to live and study for a year in the United States. They live with volunteer hosts families of all shapes and sizes, and in urban, rural, and suburban communities in all 50 states and Washington, DC.
International high school exchange participants go through a rigorous selection process, are fluent in English, and are expected to maintain a high level of academic performance, learn about American values and society while sharing theirs, and to participate in community service.
WHY FAMILIES CHOOSE TO HOST EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Host families and exchange students form lasting bonds. It’s the experience of a lifetime for both of you!
Exchange students and hosts share their daily activities, meals, rituals, and holidays throughout their time together. Not only are you able to introduce your exchange student to your community, but you get to learn more about their language and culture, too.
HOW TO BECOME A HOST FAMILY
You can host a student for a short duration or a full academic year. Volunteer host families support exchange students by providing a comfortable and nurturing home, nutritious meals, and transportation to and from school activities.
A local representative from one of the State Department’s implementing partners supports both our host families and international exchange students throughout the exchange experience.
