Reflections on the Impact of the International Visitor Leadership Program - Katka Lessing

We had a delegation coming from Kazakhstan coming to San Francisco. The focus was on disabilities and minority groups.

One of the visitors was blind. His support in his country wasn't really great and he created a non-profit organization that was focusing on helping disabled in his country.

Disabled people in wheelchairs, disabled in different conditions as himself, being blind.

We have arranged multiple meetings with local non-profit organizations, with local governmental agencies, with multiple organizations who are supporting those in their country and they can help him to understand better about the systems in the United States so he can go back and share those systems and hopefully apply some of those activities in his country.

He came to San Francisco and we had a chance to meet and one of the things that he mentioned to me was, you know, "I'm meeting all these officials, but I would really like to know what the disabled are doing in their free time," which was really interesting because that really didn't occur to me when he asked.

So, I did a lot of research and found this wonderful non-profit organization, which was Association of Disabled Sailors.

I took him sailing that weekend. We went sailing and he enjoyed it so much. There were participants who were also blind and other participants who were volunteers in the community and really want to support the organization.

When I came home, I never forgot that feeling, because I felt that someone hit a home run and I was watching that.

The experience of seeing him so happy and telling me how he would like to go back to his country and implement those programs, not necessarily sailing, but others, in the free time for the kids in his community, as well as for his colleagues and his children was really incredible.

Since then, I've sailed many multiple years and I've been teaching kids in the community, as well.

I have to say that it really - to have the opportunity to go through the International Visitor Leadership Program - and I would never really have the opportunity to lead before.
