For ten years, the U.S. Department of State has been working closely with Iraqi counterparts and American academic and nonprofit institutions to protect, preserve, and display the rich cultural heritage of Iraq. A major project has focused on the Iraq Museum in Baghdad, where looting in April 2003 left the facility physically damaged and an unsafe environment for both staff and the collections. State Department personnel were among the first responders to the museum’s needs, providing replacement office furniture, supplies, and security infrastructure. From 2008 to 2011, the Iraq Cultural Heritage Project rehabilitated and furnished 11 of the museum’s public galleries, a 3-story collections storage facility, and the conservation labs, as well as provided a new roof and upgraded climate control systems.
