Wilfredo Marroquin Jimenez is an innovative force in education. Marroquin started teaching three decades ago, and completed several postgraduate degrees in educational policy and innovation. In 2010, he began research on the level of English in El Salvadoran returnees from the United States.

In 2011, Marroquin participated in the International Visitors Leadership Program “American Language: Connecting English Teachers to U.S. History and Culture,” where he visited different educational institutions in the US and learned about American educational policies. Marroquin cites his experience seeing the popularity of volunteerism in the US compared to El Salvador as inspiration for his development of volunteer programs such as academic clinics. Further, Marroquin started an initiative to train El Salvadoran returnees to be certified English teachers in order to improve the level of English spoken in El Salvador. The project was funded by the US Embassy, a connection Marroquin made through his IVLP participation.
