1. Cultural Heritage Coordinating Committee Meeting

   On June 1, 2023, the Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Educational and Cultural Affairs, Scott Weinhold, convened a meeting of the Cultural Heritage Coordinating Committee. The Committee discussed cultural heritage protection in Ukraine and Sudan, recent multilateral engagement, and trainings and investigations with international law enforcement partners.

   The U.S. Department of State and the International Council of Museums (ICOM) have launched the Emergency Red List of Libyan Cultural Objects at Risk.

4. United States and Peru Extend Memorandum of Understanding, Over 2,000 Items Have Been Repatriated

   This week, the United States and Peru will extend their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to continue import restrictions on archaeological and certain Colonial period material from all areas of Peru.

5. Digital Documentation and Storytelling Build Greater Appreciation for Jordan’s Cultural Heritage

   An inventory and storage upgrade project supported by the State Department at the Madaba Regional Archaeological Museum was put on hold in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

7. U.S.-Canadian Bilateral Cooperation Project, Toronto, Canada

   A two-day workshop promoting U.S.-Canadian Cooperation in Preventing Illicit Trafficking of Cultural Property was held in June 2014 in Toronto, Canada, in support of an initiative of the U.S. Consulate General and the ICE Attaché’s Office and their Canadian counterparts in response to concerns about cultural objects originating from or passing through Canada and illicitly entering the United States.

8. Heritage in Peril: Iraq and Syria

   U.S. Department of State and The Metropolitan Museum of Art held an event titled “Heritage in Peril: Iraq and Syria” amid the United Nations General Assembly week.

9. U.S. Returns Stolen Artifacts to China

   After making its largest discovery of cultural property ever — 42,000 artifacts from around the world — at one U.S. home, the FBI has begun packing up and sending many of the items to the People’s Republic of China, where they belong.

10. Future of Babylon Project

    The U.S. Department of State is assisting with management planning, preservation, and educational development at the ancient site of Babylon, home to the “Tower of Babel” and Nebuchadnezzar’s wondrous “Hanging Gardens.”
