The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) recently launched the “Step In, Dream Big” initiative to level the playing field for girls and women around the world through sports by encouraging them to step into their potential and realize their dreams.
The “Step In, Dream Big” campaign seeks to create a new global network of girls and women who strive to create positive change in their local communities through sports. According to a report released by the Ernst & Young Women Athletes and Business Network and espnW, sport primes women for leadership while boosting career opportunities and earning power. When women and girls can walk on the playing field, they are more likely to step into the classroom, the boardroom, and step out as leaders in society.
In March 2019, Women’s World Cup champion, Olympic gold medalist, and U.S. Women’s National Team captain Alex Morgan helped launch “Step In, Dream Big” in a Facebook Live Q&A, which featured 21 Alex & Me viewing parties at U.S. embassies and American Spaces worldwide. The 2018 film Alex & Me taps into the power of role models to encourage girls to achieve their goals. After the screening, Morgan answered questions on her role models, favorite soccer players, and advocacy for equal opportunities and pay for female athletes.
In support of this initiative and leading up to the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup beginning on June 7 in France, U.S. embassies around the world will be hosting global watch parties of the film Alex & Me.
