IVLP: A Global Moment in Time

October 4, 2021

This month, the International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) will launch a new initiative, A Global Moment in Time, in which participants will address three different themes: the role of photojournalism in the COVID era, peace and justice at local and regional levels, and Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) around the world. The three hybrid projects will begin virtually this fall with plans for an in-person component in the United States in fall 2022.

Participants will utilize social media, digital, and print documentation to present information and photo compilations about each theme as experienced in their home communities and countries. Each Global Moment in Time project will conclude with a digital and print commemorative photobook documenting the project theme as interpreted through the participants’ perspectives.

Listed below are the three hybrid projects.

A Global Moment in Time: Photojournalists Document Challenges and Opportunities in the COVID era

Participants will examine the role of photojournalism around the world, including its role in civil discourse, public opinion, and public understanding of how COVID-19 has disrupted society, as well as how it has brought people and organizations together. The project allows participants to engage with U.S. photojournalists and media experts to discuss disinformation and the responsibility of media during the crisis, concluding in a two-day global conference. Participants will explore the importance of volunteerism, the role of government, and decentralized efforts to mitigate the pandemic.

A Global Moment in Time: Peace and Justice

This project will look at ways to foster peace and justice at local and regional levels around the world. Participants will learn how leaders and organizations in the United States engage in mediating disputes arising from political, socioeconomic, ethnic, religious, and regional differences. Further, they will explore conflict resolution methods and strategies for directing positive political, social, and economic change in a democratic society. They will also explore the skills necessary to balance divergent social demands and interests and to participate effectively in international fora to end conflict, promote justice, and sustain peace. The project will include a series of interactive dialogues on peace and justice.

A Global Moment in Time: Reflections on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility

This project will examine what Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) mean in the United States and around the globe. Participants and their U.S. counterparts will examine their own understanding of DEIA and the need to advance opportunities for all. Participants will also examine how historical trends continue to impact minorities and the efforts of modern civil rights groups to challenge assumptions and change the status quo. The project will highlight American democratic principles, enhance understanding of American values, and identify shared global challenges and opportunities.
