Lead with Your Heart

Shirley Harrison, Executive Director, International Visitor Center, Jackson MS:

The United States is not just one and of itself. You have to be open to people from all walks of life—from various countries—because that’s the way the world is changing. You cannot be an island; you can’t stand alone. And you need to be able to interact and understand other cultures. When you take one person and one personality at a time, and build on that relationship, that’s what makes a difference. And as my mother said to me many, many years ago, “What leads from the heart, touches the heart.” And it’ll make a difference. Because if you lead with your heart, and greet them with a smile and open arms, then I think that you’ll find that they’ll embrace that.
