Empowering Girls and Women through Sports
The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) launched the Step In, Dream Big initiative to level the playing field for girls and women through sports around the world. Step In, Dream Big mobilizes a range of ECA’s programs to promote participation in sports by young women so that they can experience its many benefits—increased confidence, enhanced health, and advancement in academics and the workplace.

Global Sports Mentoring Program
This flagship professional development program, which is a partnership between the U.S. Department of State and espnW, brings international leaders in the sports sector to the United States for a month-long mentorship with senior female American sports executives.
Julie Foudy & espnW Sports Leadership Academy
This summer, ECA’s Sports Visitor program convened young female athletes for a Women’s World Cup-themed soccer program. The athletes interacted with American peers in the Julie Foudy & espnW Sports Leadership Academy to celebrate the lessons of Title IX while developing plans to empower their communities at home.
Women’s Empowerment through Sports Journalism
With participants from every corner of the world, this International Visitors Program takes place in four cities across the nation. This professional development and networking program demonstrates the positive strides in sports that American women and girls have witnessed in the decades since Title IX while addressing the obstacles that women sports journalists face in the United States and abroad.
