3. Tikal National Park Project, Guatemala

   A U.S. Embassy and Guatemalan Ministry of Culture initiative supported the development of a “Master Plan for the Physical Security of Tikal National Park,” which contains one of the largest and most important ancient Maya archaeological sites.

4. Syria Cultural Heritage Initiative

   The United States strongly supports efforts to preserve Syria’s cultural heritage. Six of Syria’s heritage areas are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List and 12 more have been nominated for inclusion.

5. U.S. Department of State and espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program

   

   Tilabilenji Mvunga is the Site Coordinator for Sport in Action, an NGO that uses sport to teach life skills and educate individuals living with HIV.

6. Future of Babylon Project

   The U.S. Department of State is assisting with management planning, preservation, and educational development at the ancient site of Babylon, home to the “Tower of Babel” and Nebuchadnezzar’s wondrous “Hanging Gardens.”

   Filmmaker Ram Devineni travels the Middle East with four writers to connect with Afghan writers, poets and journalists.

8. Standing Together for Human Rights

   Daman helped set up the summer 2011 program for the first two delegations of Afghans participating in the ECA U.S./Afghan Professional Partnership.

9. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation

   The Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation supports a wide range of projects to preserve cultural heritage, such as the restoration of historic buildings, assessment and conservation of museum collections, archaeological site preservation, documentation of vanishing traditional craft techniques, improved storage conditions for archives and manuscripts, and documentation of indigenous languages.

10. U.S.-Afghan Partnership to Preserve Ghazni Towers

    

    Two historic architecture specialists from Afghanistan recently completed a 10-week internship hosted by the National Park Service through the US/ICOMOS International Exchange Program, and funded by the Bureau.
