Canada Women’s World Cup Road Show – EWG Sports Envoys

Surrounding the events of the 2015 Women’s World Cup, ECA will partner with U.S. soccer and Mission Canada to send U.S. Soccer’s Mary Harvey and Lori Lindsey to conduct a series of soccer clinics and workshops for Canadian youth. This exchange supports the U.S. Foreign Policy goal of advancing the status of women and girls around the world and reaching out to youth populations in order to promote growth and a stable democratic government.

NEA World Cup Soccer – Sports Visitors

For the 2014 World Cup, ECA hosted 16 visitors from Yemen, Libya, Tunisia, and Egypt to focus on leadership skills, conflict resolution techniques, and mutual understanding of different cultures. The 13 male and three female soccer coaches learned skills at both the grassroots and institutional levels of sports organizations to take home, including how to establish wheelchair basketball sessions.

Brazil Soccer – EWG Sports Visitors

Surrounding the events of the 2014 Paralympics in Brazil, ECA partnered with U.S. Consulate General Sao Paulo to coordinate a soccer-themed program in Washington, D.C. for 14 female youth players and two coaches from Brazil. After touring the nation's capital, participants traveled to Tennessee for soccer clinics, interacted with American peers, and engaged in team-building, conflict resolution, and disability sports sessions.

Peru Soccer – EWG Sports Envoy

In partnership with Embassy Lima, ECA selected soccer stars Kathryn Markgraf and Staci Wilson as Sports Envoys to run soccer clinics for girl soccer players between the ages of 8 to 16 in the district of San Juan de Miraflores. Envoys interacted with coaches, physical education teachers, and representatives of local sports organizations. They also led workshops and discussions focused on the role of women and sports. The program promoted gender equality and empowerment of young women while addressing issues of social integration, peace-building, and healthy lifestyles.

Sports Grants, South Africa: Virginia Commonwealth University

As part of ECA’s SportsUnited: International Sports Programming Initiative, Virginia Commonwealth University will conduct a two-way exchange focused on utilizing soccer to provide a more stable, inclusive, and tolerant society through local programs for youth. Virginia Commonwealth University will bring 14 participants from South Africa to Washington, D.C. and Richmond, Virginia, for a two-week program. The South African coaches and sport administrators will develop action plans (focused on the importance of education, which impacts numerous other social issues) as well as methods and resources for program implementation that will promote social change through sport.

The U.S. Department of State, espnW, and the University of Tennessee recognized five alumnae of the 2013 Global Sports Mentoring Program who are making history themselves.
