Warm Welcome to the World Cup Trophy

The U.S. Department of State hosted the FIFA World Cup™ trophy on April 14, 2014, in a tribute to the unique ability of sports to connect people. The universal appeal of sports is a key diplomatic tool in reaching marginalized and underserved populations, often in locations where traditional diplomacy proves challenging.

"Spirit of Soccer" Brings Help and Hope to Syrian Refugees

Childhood is far from carefree for millions of children growing up in conflict. Even a simple game of soccer can mean serious risk when a playing field may contain buried landmines or unexploded munitions. A new initiative by the U.S. Department of State is working to save lives and prevent injuries by using soccer to educate Syrian youth at the Za'atri refugee camp in northern Jordan about these hidden hazards when they will be able to return home.

As Women's History Month in March came to a close, the U.S. Department of State, espnW, and the University of Tennessee recognized five alumnae of the 2013 Global Sports Mentoring Program who are making history themselves.

Iraqi Soccer Visitors: Leveling the Playing Field

Working with our cooperative partners at the The Center for Sport, Peace, & Society, SportsUnited developed a female-focused sports diplomacy program to continue the State Department's efforts in empowering and inspiring Iraqi women and girls through sports.

Sports and Education Add Up to Empower Women and Girls

Sports and education go hand-in-hand when creating opportunities for women, girls, and youth at home and abroad. The importance of these opportunities was highlighted when Secretary of Education Arne Duncan met with 24 female international participants in a State Department Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative exchange program.

Global Sports Mentoring Program: Majidah Nantanda

Under the Empowering Women and Girls through Sports Initiative, Majidah Nantanda—Uganda's National Coach for the Women's Team—participated in the 2013 U.S. Department of State and espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program. During her time in the U.S., Majidah developed a strategy for reaching out to people in all parts Uganda through a series of grassroots soccer clinics and community coaching seminars.

GO GIRL Pakistan Empowers Pakistani Girls through Sport by Involving the Whole Family

"Girls who play sports live happily ever after," is the motivating mantra for Fatima Saleem as she works to create positive change in Pakistan. Fatima's experience in the 2013 U.S. Department of State and espnW Global Sports Mentoring Program inspired her to establish GO GIRL Pakistan, an organization that creates opportunities for girls to "get in on the sports game."

SportsUnited Launches Futsal Sports Visitors Exchange Program

U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs hosted 15 male athletes and coaches (between the ages of 20 and 30) from Libya for a futsal Sports Visitors exchange program. Futsal is a modified version of outdoor soccer played on a hard surfaced basketball-sized indoor court, with a smaller and heavier ball.
