Preservation of Artifacts from the Shu Kingdom, Jinsha

China

Funds are awarded for the preservation and conservation of artifacts recovered from salvage excavations at Jinshu, near Chengdu dating from pre 1000 BC. The artifacts include some of the earliest evidence of processing of figurines in gold, ivory and jade. Preservation and conservation of these finds will allow for greater understanding of this little studied period in Chinese history.

Excavation, Preservation and Exhibition of Han Dynasty Cultural Relics at the Guangxi Hepu Han Dynasty Tomb Museum, Guangxi Province

China

To excavate, preserve, and exhibit artifacts from the Hepu Tombs (c.200 BC - 200 AD), as well as to provide site protection to prevent looting. Hepy became an urban center in 111 BC. This ancient port city was one of the most important links on the "Silk Road of the Sea" that saw maritime trade flourish along the coastal areas of South China, reaching to Vietnam and beyond.

Exhibition Hall No. 1 of the Fujian Minyue Kingdom Capital Museum

China

To provide appropriage space and equipment to display the collection of (2nd cen. B.C.) Han Dynasty artifacts at the site museum. The artifacts are at risk of theft and damage from climate under current conditions. The archaeological site of the Minyue City is included in the World Heritage designation of the Wuyishan District.

Refurbishment of the San Shan Guild Hall, Shanghai

China

Funds are for the restoration of Three Mountain (San Shan) Guild Hall, built in 1909, representing Shanghai's unique place as a hub of international trade. Located in cosmopolitan Shanghai, tens of thousands of visitors will enjoy the restored hall each year.

Dege Sutra Printing House

China

Grant funds support the professional assessment of and a plan for the preservation of the Dege Sutra Printing House a 280 year-old historic wooden structure in which are stored 270,000 hand-carved wooden blocks preserving some 70% of traditional Tibetan literary culture.

Conservation of Ming and Qing Buddhist Sutra Volumes from Old Beijing

China

To enable the conservation of a collection of 80 Buddhist Sutras from the Ming and Qing dynasties originally found in temples from the same era. Volumes contain blood writing, painted illustrations and calligraphy representing the history and culture of Buddhist temple life in 15th and 16th century Beijing. Accelerating erosion and acidification threatens this collection.

Preservation of Tibetan Traditional Folk Cultures in Qinghai Province

China

To preserve ritual celebrations, songs, games, and other threatened folk cultural activities in Tibetan communities in Qinghai Province. The project includes the production and distribution of a nine-part series of DVDs and books, each detailing a specific activity, to increase awareness and interest in Tibetan folk culture.

Conservation and Display of Ancient Silk Objects from the Warring States Period in the Hubei Provincial Museum

China

To help conserve and display a unique collection of silk embroideries dating from 770 to 221 B.C. Current storage and display conditions do not control for humidity, light, or pollution, and the collection urgently needs protection. This project involves display area upgrades, an exhibit, and a catalogue.
